Zamfara Govt Rules Out School Closure, Unveils Strengthened Security Measures

The Zamfara State government has assured residents that no public or private school in the state will be shut down despite rising insecurity across northern Nigeria.

The state said it has activated enhanced security strategies to protect learning centres and ensure uninterrupted academic activities.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Wadatau Madawaki, gave the assurance during a press briefing in Gusau, shortly after an event organised by the Federated Association of Zamfara State Students.

Madawaki explained that the recent abduction of 25 students at Government Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko Wasagu Local Council of Kebbi State, and the attack on Saint Mary’s Catholic School in Niger State, prompted Zamfara to intensify security reviews around schools.

“Many states in the North have ordered immediate closure of schools, but Zamfara will not follow suit,” the commissioner said.
“Instead, authorities are strengthening security in and around schools to deter bandit attacks. We have taken steps to safeguard the interests of our students, and the security of our schools is well taken care of.”

He added that the state maintains active collaboration with security agencies to ensure continuous learning throughout the academic term.

Madawaki noted that most states ordering closures operate boarding schools, which are more vulnerable to nighttime attacks — a system Zamfara has yet to reinstate due to insecurity.

“Here, our schools run during the day,” he said. “That gives us a comparative advantage in controlling exposure to risk.”

He, however, acknowledged that schools located in high-risk communities will remain closed until security conditions improve.
