Abuja — A youth advocacy group, on Wednesday, took its campaign against air pollution to markets and schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), urging residents to embrace cleaner and safer energy alternatives.
The campaign, led by Ms. Daniella Omotola, a young Rotaractor from the Rotaract Club of Omole Golden, District 9111, and an environmental behavior advocate, seeks to promote public awareness and the adoption of clean energy solutions in the nation’s capital.
The outreach featured handbill and flier distribution, along with interactive talk sessions aimed at educating residents and students about the health and environmental risks associated with air pollution.
‘Breathe Clean Air Abuja’ Set for Launch
Speaking during the exercise, Omotola announced that the “Breathe Clean Air Abuja” project — a flagship public-private partnership initiative under the FCT Administration (FCTA) — will be officially launched on November 13.
According to her, the campaign will target over 5,000 households across the six area councils of the FCT, with a special focus on underserved communities.
“This initiative focuses on discouraging the use of charcoal and firewood stoves, which are major contributors to air pollution,” Omotola explained.
“Our goal is to replace traditional cooking methods with gas-powered alternatives that are safer for both people and the planet.”
Mobilising Youths for Environmental Protection
Omotola emphasized that youth participation is central to the success of the project, noting that young people hold the power to shape a more sustainable future.
“Air pollution affects our health, our environment, and our future. As youths, we must take action to protect the environment for generations to come,” she said.
She added that the campaign incorporates creative youth engagement strategies, including debates, poem recitations, talent hunts, competitions, social media challenges, and the establishment of environmental clubs in schools.
Outstanding participants, she said, would be rewarded with incentives and prizes to encourage sustained involvement.
Omotola also commended the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, for their support and confidence in the youth-led initiative.
FCTA Partners Rotaract Clubs to Deepen Impact
In his remarks, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary, FCTA Health Services and Environment Secretariat, reaffirmed the administration’s partnership with Rotaract Clubs and other stakeholders in driving environmental advocacy.
“We are working with Rotaract Clubs and youth groups to sensitize residents about the dangers of air pollution and the need to adopt cleaner, safer energy options,” Fasawe said.
He added that the campaign also aims to encourage households to switch from firewood and charcoal to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), while promoting eco-friendly practices that minimize exposure to toxic emissions and hazardous substances.
With initiatives like “Breathe Clean Air Abuja,” young advocates hope to inspire behavioral change and push for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment across the FCT and beyond.
