DAMATURU — The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yobe State University has reaffirmed its ongoing strike, insisting that it remains unresolved despite recent partial concessions by the state government.
Dr. Ahmed Karage, Chairman of ASUU at the institution, clarified in a statement on Monday that the industrial action, which commenced on July 11, has not been suspended. While acknowledging the implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage consequential adjustment in July, Karage stressed that other key demands remain unmet.
“The implementation of the wage adjustment is just one item on a broader list of unresolved issues,” he stated. “We urge the public to understand our position. The union is committed to returning to work, but only after a concrete Memorandum of Understanding is signed with the government.”
Unmet Demands and Lingering Frustrations
Karage outlined several critical demands that continue to hang in the balance:

Implementation of academic staff promotions as approved by the university council.

Payment of promotion arrears from 2018 to 2025.

Settlement of arrears for consequential wage adjustments dating back to 2019 through 2024.

Disbursement of the 35% and 25% salary awards to Professors and other academic cadres for 2023–2025.

Full payment of arrears arising from the ₦70,000 minimum wage covering January 2024 to June 2025.
According to the union, these unresolved financial obligations have significantly affected staff morale and the effective functioning of the institution.
Public Support Sought as Talks Continue
While negotiations between ASUU and the Yobe State Government remain ongoing, the union says its doors are open to dialogue. However, it insists that only a binding agreement — not verbal assurances — will be sufficient to call off the strike.
“We are not on strike out of convenience,” Dr. Karage added. “This is a fight for fairness, for dignity, and for the proper functioning of our university system.”
As the impasse drags on, students and parents continue to bear the brunt of the standoff, with academic activities on hold and no clear timeline for resolution.
