The Yobe State Government has approved automatic employment for 416 graduates of nursing and midwifery, a move aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare workforce and improving medical service delivery across its communities.
The announcement was made during the graduation ceremony of students from the Shehu Sule College of Nursing Sciences in Damaturu, where government officials and stakeholders in the health sector gathered to celebrate the graduating class.
According to the state government, the newly recruited professionals consist of 158 Community Nurses, 196 Basic Nurses and Midwives, and 62 Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates in Nursing. The initiative is part of the administration’s broader strategy to address manpower shortages in hospitals and primary healthcare centres across the state.
Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Idi Barde Gubana, explained that the automatic employment policy demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system and ensuring that residents have access to quality medical services.
He noted that linking graduation directly to employment would not only help fill critical staffing gaps in health facilities but also encourage more young people in the state to pursue careers in nursing and midwifery. The governor added that the government’s continued investment in health education institutions is already producing positive outcomes for the state’s healthcare sector.
Health experts and stakeholders have described the policy as a significant step toward reducing the shortage of medical personnel, particularly in rural communities where access to healthcare professionals remains limited. The newly employed graduates are expected to be deployed to state hospitals, primary healthcare centres, and community clinics across Yobe State.
Officials of the college confirmed that all the graduates met the necessary academic and professional requirements, making them eligible for immediate integration into the state’s health workforce. The recruitment programme is designed to ensure that trained health professionals are absorbed quickly into the system where their services are most needed.
In addition to the employment announcement, outstanding graduates were recognised for exceptional academic and clinical performance during the ceremony, highlighting the state’s emphasis on merit and professional excellence.
The government also reiterated that the employment initiative forms part of a wider healthcare reform programme that includes the expansion of health infrastructure, provision of modern medical equipment, and continuous training for healthcare workers. Authorities believe these measures will contribute significantly to improving healthcare outcomes for residents of the state.
