YABATECH Students Gain Hands-On Engineering Experience at Metro Smart City Site

As part of efforts to expose Nigeria’s emerging engineers to the practical realities of their profession, Metrospeed has hosted Civil Engineering students from Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) at the Metro Smart City Project site in Lekki, Lagos State.

The educational visit took the students to the sprawling 97-hectare lagoon-front development, where they were given a rare opportunity to witness large-scale construction activities and gain firsthand insight into engineering practice beyond the confines of the classroom.

During the tour, the students observed various stages of the project, allowing them to connect theoretical concepts learned in lectures with the practical demands of modern engineering and infrastructure development.

The excursion was organised by Geotechnical Engineering lecturer and Chief Executive Officer of the Engineering Resource Academy, Omolola Adetona.

According to her, the initiative was designed to give students practical exposure to major construction projects and help them better understand how engineering principles are applied in real-world environments.

Speaking at the Lekki head office of Metrospeed Group before the tour of the project site, Dr. Adetona stressed the importance of practical training in shaping the next generation of engineers.

She noted that the visit was also aimed at addressing concerns about declining professional standards among young engineers by strengthening the connection between academic learning and industry practice.

“Over the years, we’ve discovered that young engineers are not living up to expectations compared with the sustainability of our profession,” she said.

Dr. Adetona added that the field trip was intended to demonstrate to the students that civil engineering is a dynamic and evolving discipline that extends far beyond lecture notes and classroom discussions.

The initiative, she said, is part of a broader effort to ensure that engineering students acquire the practical knowledge required to meet the growing demands of Nigeria’s infrastructure and urban development.
