The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a strong reminder to secondary school principals across Kwara State as the deadline for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) registration approaches. The examination body cautioned that any school that fails to complete the process within the stipulated timeframe risks having its candidates excluded from the examination.

In a circular dated January 6, 2026, and addressed to all principals in the state, WAEC confirmed that the online registration, which commenced on Monday, September 22, 2025, will close officially on Saturday, January 17, 2026. The Council stressed that the deadline remains firm and would not be extended under any circumstances.

WAEC emphasized that the responsibility for ensuring timely registration rests entirely with school managements, urging principals to treat the matter with utmost urgency. “Please be reminded that the period for online registration of entries for the above diet… will elapse on Saturday, January 17, 2026,” the circular read, underscoring the finality of the date.

Principals were further directed to ensure that all eligible candidates in their schools are fully registered before the portal closes, as late submissions will not be entertained. The circular, signed by the Kwara State Branch Controller of WAEC, Mr. M. A. Akhanemeh, is part of the Council’s broader efforts to streamline examination processes and prevent last-minute disruptions.

Education stakeholders in Kwara have described the reminder as timely, noting that many schools tend to delay registration until the deadline approaches. While some principals cited challenges such as late fee payments and occasional technical hitches, WAEC insisted that such issues should be addressed proactively to avoid jeopardizing candidates’ futures.

Parents and guardians have also been urged to support schools by providing required information and payments promptly. Education experts warn that missing the registration deadline could have serious implications for students, including delayed academic progression and disrupted admission plans.

WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible and hitch-free 2026 WASSCE, while encouraging school heads to rely on official communication channels for updates and support.
