Jos, Nigeria – The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Professor Tanko Ishaya, has urged students to rededicate themselves to academic excellence and take full advantage of the growing support the university continues to attract from local and international partners.
Professor Ishaya made the appeal while receiving two Perkins Braille Machines and a substantial collection of academic books donated by philanthropists Dr. Gwom Peter of Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom, and Mr. Andrew Gani-Ikilama of the Bitrus Gani-Ikilama Fellows.
Highlighting the institution’s rising goodwill, Professor Ishaya noted that contributions from partners, alumni, and development-focused individuals have significantly enhanced teaching, learning, and research. He called on students to reciprocate these efforts by improving their academic performance and preparing themselves to compete effectively in the global labour market.
Describing the donations as “thoughtful and impactful,” the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the Braille machines would support visually impaired students, while the donated books and research materials would be fully integrated into the University Library to benefit both current and future scholars.
Dr. Gwom Peter explained that his contribution was inspired by the University of Jos’ strong academic reputation and its influence on his own academic journey. He also cited the library’s loss of planning-related resources in a previous fire as a motivating factor for donating books in the field of urban and regional planning. He encouraged Nigerian scholars in the diaspora, particularly those from Plateau State, to support the university with unused academic materials.
Mr. Andrew Gani-Ikilama said the Braille machine donation honored his late father, Dr. Bitrus Gani, an educationist whose dedication to academic excellence shaped the lives of his children. He noted that the donation specifically targets visually impaired students in the Department of Special Education, highlighting beneficiaries Paul Joseph Agoru and Elizabeth Adenike Shokayode for their outstanding performance.
He urged Nigerians, especially alumni, to embrace a culture of giving, stressing that meaningful impact does not require wealth. “Whatever you bring, no matter how small, can uplift someone and give them a better quality of life,” he said.
The University of Jos affirmed that these donations strengthen its ongoing commitment to academic excellence, inclusivity, and global educational standards.
