The Senate of University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of 28 students following findings of serious disciplinary and criminal offences, underscoring the institution’s renewed determination to uphold academic integrity and campus safety.
The sanctions were ratified at the university’s 191st Regular Senate meeting after careful consideration of a report from the Student Disciplinary Committee, according to a statement released on Sunday by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob.
The expelled students were found culpable of a range of offences, including cult-related activities, examination malpractice, possession and use of hard drugs, threats to life, assault, burglary, and theft. Several were also implicated in uploading falsified ‘O’ Level results to the university’s admission portal and failing to appear before the disciplinary panel despite repeated invitations.
In addition to the expulsions, the Senate approved the withdrawal of academic certificates previously issued to 15 former students who ignored repeated disciplinary summonses. Meanwhile, nine students were cleared of wrongdoing after investigations, and 33 others received formal warnings for lesser infractions such as hostel racketeering, conspiracy, and fighting.
Reacting to the Senate’s decision, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the institution’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct. He reiterated that the university will not compromise its standards or condone behaviour that threatens the welfare of the academic community.
“The academic integrity of the University is sacrosanct, and we are determined that anyone who violates it will be appropriately sanctioned,” Fawehinmi said, emphasising that disciplinary measures are intended not only to punish wrongdoing but to guide students toward responsible citizenship and academic excellence.
He also noted that the university is enhancing student engagement, counselling, and orientation programmes to prevent future violations and foster a safer, more conducive learning environment.
The latest disciplinary action comes amid growing concerns about cultism, examination fraud, and other forms of indiscipline in Nigerian tertiary institutions, spotlighting the ongoing challenge of reinforcing ethical standards and student conduct on campuses nationwide.
