The Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State, has dismissed five staff members, including two professors, over various acts of gross misconduct.
The affected officials comprise two professors, two senior academic staff members, and a senior administrative officer. Their dismissal was approved during the institution’s 122nd Governing Council meeting held on Friday.
In a statement issued on Monday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Harrison Madubueze, the institution said the disciplinary action underscores its commitment to maintaining integrity, professionalism, and ethical standards within the university community.
Among those dismissed are C.C. Nwabachili, the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences.
The university also announced the dismissal of Dr. I.H. Iheukwumere and Mr. Emeka Nwabunnia, both members of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Uli Campus. According to the statement, the duo was found culpable of offences including sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion, and other forms of ethical misconduct.
Also dismissed was Mrs. Ifeoma Kakulu, a Principal Assistant Registrar who served as the Examination Officer for the Faculty of Law at the Igbariam Campus during the period the alleged infractions occurred.
The university stated that the decisions followed due consideration by the Governing Council as part of efforts to uphold discipline and accountability across its campuses.
“The Council reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on acts capable of tarnishing the image and reputation of the university,” the statement noted.
It further warned that staff members found engaging in unethical conduct would continue to face severe sanctions, regardless of rank or position.
The institution reiterated its commitment to fostering a safe, transparent, and accountable academic environment, in line with its vision of building a modern university equipped to meet present and future challenges.
University authorities also emphasized that maintaining high ethical standards remains critical to preserving public confidence in the institution and ensuring a conducive atmosphere for teaching, learning, and research.
