Uyo, Nigeria – The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Professor Ndaudoh Ndaeyo, has raised serious concerns over persistent land encroachment on the institution’s property, revealing that Nigerian Army and Police officers had to sleep in the bush for several days to protect university land during a critical perimeter fencing project.
Prof. Ndaeyo made the disclosure on Tuesday, 19 November 2025, during a live media chat held at the 1,000-capacity TETFund Auditorium, organised by GIE Art Lead in partnership with the UNIUYO Printing Press. The interactive session, titled “Professor Ndaeyo’s Administration: Fallacies or Fact,” provided the outgoing vice-chancellor an opportunity to address controversies, highlight achievements, and clarify issues ahead of his exit on 1 December 2025.
“Truly, 50 per cent of our challenge has been land encroachment,” Prof. Ndaeyo said. He explained that the university frequently faced opposition from individuals and host communities attempting to claim parts of its land for personal gain, forcing repeated court interventions. He expressed gratitude to TETFund for approving funds for the perimeter fencing project, which he described as essential for safeguarding the institution’s property.
“Erecting the fence has been a herculean task,” he said. “We had to deploy police and army personnel who slept in the bush to allow us to fence even a small portion of the land due to opposition from the host community.” Despite acts of vandalism and breaches, Prof. Ndaeyo noted progress following the acquisition of certificates of occupancy for all campuses, which has clarified ownership and reduced legal disputes.
Addressing allegations of financial impropriety in student admissions, the vice-chancellor firmly denied any involvement in collecting money for admissions, asserting that any fraudulent activities were carried out without his knowledge or benefit.
Prof. Ndaeyo also highlighted key achievements under his administration, including:

Allocation of N1 billion for large-scale commercial farming, a core university mandate.

Establishment of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) plant and a solar power generation facility.

Creation of seven new faculties, increasing the total from 12 to 19.

Upgraded campus electrification, ensuring consistent power supply.

Major staff promotion exercise, advancing 566 staff members in professional cadres, including 214 full professors, 252 associate professors, and 35 deputy directors in a single day.
Throughout the session, Prof. Ndaeyo emphasised transparency, institutional growth, and infrastructural development as defining features of his tenure. He expressed hope that the incoming administration would consolidate these gains and continue strengthening UNIUYO’s commitment to academic excellence and community service.
