The one-year project, in collaboration with Edinburgh Napier University, is designed to integrate cutting-edge digital technologies into vocational training, positioning Nigeria’s construction sector for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
Announcing the initiative at a press conference in Uyo, Professor Emmanuel Akpabio, Director of the Directorate of International Programmes and lead investigator, said the project would equip Nigerians with practical, future-driven skills while boosting employability and productivity.
According to him, beneficiaries will be trained in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Building Information Modelling (BIM), and smart sustainability practices, ensuring the construction workforce is equipped for evolving industry demands.
Key activities include a **train-the-trainers workshop** scheduled for October 14–17, 2025, in Uyo, capacity-building programmes for technical institutions and industry professionals, as well as exchange visits to Edinburgh Napier University and construction industry partners in the United Kingdom.
Akpabio, also a senior research fellow at the Institute for Research and Policy Integration for Africa (IRPA), emphasised that the project would deepen academia-industry collaboration, foster entrepreneurship, and provide students with hands-on, industry-relevant training.
He commended UNIUYO Vice Chancellor, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, for his support, and applauded the British Council for its investment in the initiative, describing it as a landmark that further strengthens the university’s profile with international funding agencies.
“We urge the public, industry stakeholders, academia, and the media to follow the project’s activities. Together, we can harness digital technologies to drive sustainability, inclusiveness, and employability in vocational education,” Akpabio said.
