The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Rivers State Command, to curb drug abuse and other social vices among students and young people in its host communities.
The collaboration was formally sealed on August 26, 2025, during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the PCRC to the Vice Chancellor of UNIPORT, Professor Owunari Georgewill, at the university’s Senate Building.
The initiative, anchored on the PCRC’s *War Against Drug Abuse (WADA)* campaign, will focus on advocacy, sensitisation, and preventive programmes to protect young people from the dangers of drug addiction and its associated criminal tendencies.
Chairman of the PCRC in Rivers State, Voke Emore, commended UNIPORT for its commitment to excellence and pledged sustained cooperation with the institution. He noted that the PCRC has been working closely with agencies such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to intensify anti-drug campaigns across tertiary institutions.
“We understand the strong link between illicit drug use and criminal behaviour. That is why we are expanding our campaign to UNIPORT. We look forward to a productive partnership as we intensify efforts to safeguard our youths,” Emore stated.
Vice Chancellor Georgewill described the collaboration as both strategic and timely, given the university’s population of over 40,000 students.
“The university is a place where we encounter the good, the bad, and the ugly. By counselling and educating students on the dangers of drug abuse, you are preventing crime while protecting their health. We will give this campaign our full support,” he assured.
The meeting ended with the PCRC presenting a certificate of partnership to UNIPORT, symbolising their shared resolve to promote safety, discipline, and healthy living within the university and beyond.
