The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has dismissed reports circulating in a viral social media video alleging that some of its students were arrested for collaborating with Boko Haram insurgents, describing the claims as false, baseless, and malicious.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the Registrar of the University, Ahmad Lawan, clarified that no student of the institution has ever been linked to Boko Haram or any extremist organisation operating in the North-East or any part of Nigeria.

He explained that the university’s attention was drawn to a disturbing video making the rounds online, falsely alleging that UNIMAID students were involved in terrorist activities.
“The University management wishes to categorically state that the allegations contained in the video are baseless, false, and mischievous. No student of the University of Maiduguri has been found to have links with Boko Haram insurgents or any other similar groups,” the statement read.

Lawan reaffirmed that the University maintains a strict zero-tolerance stance toward extremism, violence, and criminality, stressing that UNIMAID has played a significant role in countering violent extremism and promoting peace-building initiatives in the North-East region.

He further highlighted that, given its historical and geographical significance, UNIMAID remains a leading advocate for peaceful coexistence, civic responsibility, and national security awareness among its students, staff, and surrounding communities.

“The University community consists of disciplined, law-abiding staff and students engaged primarily in academic pursuits,” the Registrar stated, adding that its students are known for good conduct, resilience, and dedication to learning despite years of regional security challenges.

The management warned against the spread of false and unverified information capable of causing fear, stigma, and reputational damage to the institution. It urged parents, guardians, the media, and the general public to disregard the viral video and rely solely on verified, credible information, especially concerning sensitive security issues.

Reaffirming its commitment, the University of Maiduguri emphasized that it remains dedicated to academic excellence, discipline, peace-building, national unity, and continued collaboration with security agencies to safeguard lives and property.
