Ayodeji Akinsanya, the best graduating student of the University of Ilorin for the 2023/2024 academic session, has commenced a fully funded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in Mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, United States. He will also serve as a Graduate Teaching Assistant during his studies.
Akinsanya, who graduated with a remarkable Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.97, arrived in the U.S. three weeks ago to begin what he described as a new phase of research, teaching, and academic growth.
The 2023 valedictorian recalled the struggles that shaped his academic path, including writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) four times before gaining admission into UNILORIN. He said the experience instilled resilience and discipline, which later defined his study habits and academic success.
He revealed that his study method relied on repeatedly reading materials for deeper understanding, while using academic breaks to prepare for upcoming courses—an approach that gave him a strong foundation each semester.
Reflecting on his journey, Akinsanya expressed gratitude to his mentors, recommenders, and supporters, acknowledging their roles in his achievements.
> “Graduating as the best student of the University of Ilorin marked the end of one phase. This doctoral programme is the beginning of another, and I am ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead,” he said.
