Academic and administrative activities at the University of Ilorin have been brought to a halt following the commencement of an indefinite strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universiti..

The industrial action, which took effect on May 1, 2026, disrupted operations across the campus, with union members staging a peaceful protest at the institution’s main gate on Monday. Demonstrators carried placards highlighting their demands, including improved welfare conditions, payment of withheld salaries, and a 45 per cent salary increment.

The unions also rejected the Federal Government’s proposed 30 per cent salary increase, describing it as inadequate in addressing the economic realities faced by non-teaching staff.

Chairman of SSANU at UNILORIN, Prof. Falowo Olushola, attributed the strike to the government’s continued delay in concluding and implementing the 2009 agreement with non-academic staff unions. He disclosed that several ultimatums issued since December 2025 and March 2026 failed to yield meaningful engagement or resolution.

Olushola maintained that the unions remain resolute in their demands, insisting on the full implementation of the agreement and a minimum 45 per cent salary increase as a condition for suspending the strike.

The development raises fresh concerns over stability in Nigeria’s university system, as prolonged industrial actions continue to disrupt academic calendars and institutional productivity.
