The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, has tasked faculty members of the newly established Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences to align their activities with national priorities while fostering stronger international collaborations.
She gave the charge on Saturday, August 23, 2025, during the inauguration of the faculty’s maiden retreat held at the UNILAG Guest Houses and Conference Centre. Themed *“Strengthening Our Foundation, Shaping Our Future,”* the retreat brought together academic staff from the faculty’s five departments: Anatomic and Molecular Pathology; Haematology and Blood Transfusion; Medical Microbiology and Parasitology; Clinical Pathology; and Clinical Pharmacology.
Congratulating the faculty led by Dean, Professor Fatimah Abdulkareem, Ogunsola noted that the new unit was established to drive national development through advances in Basic Clinical Sciences. She urged staff to build a strong academic community, strengthen inter-departmental research collaborations, and remove bureaucratic barriers hindering global partnerships.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Professor Bola Oboh, encouraged faculty members to pioneer innovations that will enhance local capacity building and enrich medical training. She described the retreat as a vital step toward raising the faculty’s profile within the university.
Goodwill messages from the Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Ademola Oremosu, and the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Matthew Ilori, emphasized the need for new academic programmes and research-driven initiatives.
Dean Abdulkareem and Planning Committee Chairman, Professor Titilope Adeyemo, described the retreat as a platform to consolidate faculty identity and strengthen community engagement.
The opening session featured presentations from guest resource persons, Dr. Tunde Popoola and Pharmacist Abimbola Adebakin, who facilitated technical discussions on developing the faculty’s vision, mission, and strategic objectives. Participants also engaged in group sessions to design annual programmes, set timelines, and define measurable outcomes.
The Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences is one of seven newly established faculties at UNILAG, bringing the institution’s total number of faculties to 19.
