UNILAG Trains Sub-Deans, Course Advisers to Boost Academic Efficiency and Student Success

The capacity-building session, held from February 11 to 12, 2026, was organised by the institution’s Staff Training and Development Unit and focused on improving advising systems, results management and timely graduation processes.

In her opening remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research), Professor Bola Oboh, underscored the university’s resolve to tackle recurring challenges associated with result processing and graduation delays. She stressed the need for digital transformation of academic procedures and urged course advisers to prioritise accuracy, efficiency and proactive student guidance.

The training, themed “Advising with Impact: Unlocking Potentials, Fostering Success,” featured presentations by senior academics and administrators who shared practical strategies for strengthening advisory roles within the university.

Prof. Khalid Adekoya, Director of the School of Foundation Studies, highlighted the core responsibilities of course advisers, emphasising approaches that promote students’ academic growth and sense of belonging.

Dr. O. O. Iroanya of Life Sciences and Dr. Sunday Edegwa of Management Sciences — advisers to the institution’s overall best graduating students in 2024 and 2025 — offered insights into effective mentoring, decision-making support and goal-setting techniques.

From a psychological perspective, Dr. Afolayan Aroyewun of the Department of Psychology addressed common advising challenges, including heavy workloads, curriculum adjustments and unclear student objectives. He advocated for the integration of technology and alignment with students’ mental health needs to enhance outcomes.

Dr. Eno Akarawak of the Quality Assurance and SERVICOM Unit spoke on the importance of empathy, communication skills, conflict resolution and maintaining professional boundaries in student interactions.

Prof. Abimbola Sowemimo, Chairman of the Senate Business Committee, provided guidance on academic record management and results processing, stressing confidentiality, compliance and meticulous attention to detail.

Prof. M.O.H. Amuda encouraged advisers to leverage digital tools to streamline administrative processes, while Mr. Lucky Inegbenosun emphasised emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills as critical to building trust with students.

Additionally, Prof. Olusoji Ilori, Director of the Academic Planning Unit, clarified regulatory adjustments arising from the transition from Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) to Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), ensuring advisers remain aligned with current national policies.

The programme concluded with a call for integrity, transparency and timeliness in academic advising. Participants were urged to adopt best practices, minimise errors in result management and safeguard students’ academic progression.

The initiative underscores UNILAG’s broader commitment to institutional efficiency, regulatory compliance and student-centred academic support through continuous professional development.
