The Faculty of Arts at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the Faculty of Arts Alumni Association and Cityview Hospital Limited, has commissioned a ₦30 million healthcare facility to provide accessible medical services for students and staff.
Named the Cityview Hospital Faculty of Arts Clinic, the facility is the first faculty-based clinic in the university's history and is expected to improve access to quality healthcare within the academic environment.
The clinic, which was recently inaugurated on the UNILAG campus, will cater to members of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Creative Arts under the supervision of the university's Medical Centre.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Akanbi Ilupeju, described the project as a strategic intervention aimed at addressing recurring health challenges among students, particularly during examination periods.
He noted that the facility would provide timely medical care for both students and staff while reducing disruptions to academic activities caused by health-related emergencies.
"This project is a major step towards addressing health challenges faced by students, particularly during examination periods, while also ensuring accessible medical care for academic and non-academic staff," Ilupeju said.
The dean added that the clinic reflects the faculty's commitment to promoting the health and wellbeing of members of its academic community.
Also speaking, the National Social Secretary of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Francis Shonubi, described the inauguration as a landmark achievement for the institution.
"Today is a historic moment for all of us as we gather for the official grand opening of the Cityview Hospital Faculty of Arts Clinic, the first of its kind in the University of Lagos," he said.
Shonubi explained that the facility was established to provide prompt and convenient healthcare services within the faculty environment, thereby enhancing the welfare of students and staff.
According to him, the clinic will operate as a full-service medical facility from Monday to Friday, with a resident doctor and nurse available to attend to patients.
The healthcare centre is expected to provide comprehensive medical and wellness services exclusively to members of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Creative Arts.
The Faculty of Arts also expressed appreciation to the Chief Medical Director of Cityview Hospital Limited, Dr. Mutiu Shittu, and the hospital's management for supporting the establishment of the clinic, describing the partnership as a significant contribution to healthcare delivery and student welfare at the university.
