The Chairman of the University of Jos Alumni Association, Gad Peter Shamaki, has criticised the recent protests by two women’s groups in Jos over whether Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, should join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

On Tuesday, two opposing groups took to the streets—one urging the governor to defect to the APC, and another warning him against making such a move.

Shamaki, however, described the demonstrations as misdirected and unproductive, urging the women to channel their energy toward more meaningful political advocacy—particularly the fight for women’s rights and their inclusion in decision-making spaces.

In a statement titled “Beyond the Protests: A Call for Meaningful Women’s Participation in Politics,” Shamaki argued that if both the Presidency and the APC genuinely want Governor Mutfwang to join the party—and if the governor himself chooses to—no amount of protest will stop the decision.

He expressed disappointment that the protests came at a time the world is focused on advancing women’s safety, empowerment, and digital protection under the theme “Unite to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls.”

Shamaki lamented that many of the women involved in the demonstrations are often excluded when crucial political decisions are made and their voices seldom count within party structures dominated by male leadership.

He advised the groups to redirect their efforts toward promoting peace, development, and stability across Plateau State, as well as advocating for the reservation of special legislative seats for women at both state and national levels.

He also urged them to prioritise issues such as quality education for children affected by insecurity and preparations for the upcoming festive season.

Shamaki concluded that, for those who understand political dynamics, the likely outcome of this “unnecessary social media distraction” is already predictable.
