The Pro-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI) and former Governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande, on Monday emphasized the urgent need for stronger institutional autonomy in Nigerian universities to ensure efficiency and preserve academic standards.
Akande made the remarks during UI’s 77th Foundation Day celebrations at the International Conference Centre, Ibadan, Oyo State, an event that also witnessed the award of 487 Doctor of Philosophy degrees and the conferment of honorary degrees on selected distinguished individuals.
Highlighting the challenges posed by excessive bureaucracy, Akande noted that even routine staff recruitment often requires months of approvals across multiple ministries. He warned that such delays risked draining Nigeria of its brightest talents, as promising academics seek opportunities abroad.
“Under such an ugly and corrupt bureaucracy, how would the universities be able to hunt for new talents or prevent the slipping away of our brightest minds into foreign opportunities?” he questioned.
He called for strict adherence to existing laws governing universities and advocated for their revision in line with global best practices. “The constant assumption that ‘he who pays the piper dictates the tunes’ is inappropriate in the delicate professional environment of academia,” Akande stressed.
The Pro-Chancellor also commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, and his management team for steering the university through challenges while maintaining high academic standards. He further lauded the University Council’s initiative to establish a scholarship scheme for top science undergraduates, funded from his personal allowances.
“The University of Ibadan is indeed fortunate to have leaders committed to both excellence and the welfare of students,” Akande added.
Addressing the graduands, he reminded them that the true value of a university degree extends beyond academics to encompass character, integrity, and ethical conduct.
“Remember, the worth of a university degree is in the humane character displayed daily. Be courageous, ethical, and exemplary as you step into your professional careers,” he advised.
