Students from seven Nigerian universities gathered on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, for the Dr. Adedeji Adeleke Inter-University Debate, an intellectually stimulating contest that examined the future of youth participation in Nigeria’s electoral process.

The debate, themed “Youth Participation in Elections: A Necessity or an Option?”, featured thought-provoking arguments and critical perspectives from participating students who examined whether the country’s young population should consider electoral participation a civic duty or merely a voluntary choice.

The debate was organised in honour of Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, the founder of Adeleke University and father of international music star Davido, in recognition of his contributions to education and youth development. The citation in honour of Dr. Adeleke was delivered by Dr. Precious.

Several top officials of Adeleke University attended the event, including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Adebola Adegbola, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof.Luke Onuoha, and the Registrar, Alhaji Gbadegesin Lawal. Also present were the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Adegbite Tobalashe, the University Librarian, Prof.Uloma Onuoha, the Head of the Department of Arts, Prof. Folorunsho Ladapo, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Babarinde, and Prof. Oyedepo Temitope from the Department of Arts.

Although the competition was initially scheduled to feature ten universities, seven institutions eventually participated in the debate.

Representing University of Ilesa were Abiola Philip and Oyebode Omolola, while Joseph Ayo Babalola University was represented by Oluwashina Priscilia and Akinmutimi Miracle. Babcock University fielded Ikechukwu Joshua and Afolabi Covenant, while the host institution, Adeleke University, was represented by Akinremi Sharon and Adesoji Hezekiah.

Other participants included University of Ibadan, represented by Blessing Emmanuel and Olabiyi Temiloluwa; Redeemer's University, represented by Eden Sharon and Akin-Davis Ayanfeoluwa; and Fountain University, represented by Hammed Osuolale and Folaranmi Ayobami.

After an intense exchange of arguments and rebuttals, the judges announced the final results. Redeemer's University finished seventh with 55.08 percent, while University of Ilesa placed sixth with 57.50 percent. The host, Adeleke University, recorded 62.70 percent, while Fountain University secured 63.67 percent. Joseph Ayo Babalola University emerged second runner-up with 64.08 percent, while Babcock University finished as first runner-up with 66.50 percent.

In a closely contested finale, University of Ibadan clinched the overall victory with 66.58 percent, narrowly edging out the first runner-up to emerge champion of the debate.

Beyond the institutional prizes awarded to the universities, several participants received individual recognitions. Abiola Philip of University of Ilesa won a cash prize as Best Rebuttal Speaker. Afolabi Covenant of Babcock University received awards and cash prizes as Best Male Speaker and First Runner-Up Best Speaker. Eden Sharon of Redeemer's University was honoured with Best Female Speaker and Overall Best Speaker, while Blessing Emmanuel of University of Ibadan emerged First Runner-Up Best Female Speaker.

The competition also featured attractive rewards for the top institutions. The second runner-up received ₦80,000, the first runner-up went home with ₦120,000 and other prizes, while the overall winner received ₦200,000 alongside additional awards and cash prizes, adding excitement to the highly competitive debate.
