The University of Ibadan (UI) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has awarded a total of ₦1.1 million in scholarships to 11 financially disadvantaged students under its 2024/2025 Indigent Student Scholarship Programme.
The initiative, designed to support the academic aspirations of students facing economic hardship, followed a competitive selection process. Over 100 applicants were screened, with 11 students emerging as beneficiaries based on academic merit and personal interviews conducted by the scholarship committee.
Of the recipients, two students received ₦200,000 each from the National ASUU body. The UI branch of ASUU awarded ₦100,000 each to five students, while Professor Tajudeen Àkànjí, a member of the UI ASUU branch, personally donated ₦50,000 each to four other students.
Chairman of the ASUU-UI chapter, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, reaffirmed the union's commitment to supporting quality education, despite ongoing challenges such as delayed salaries and the federal government’s refusal to finalize a new agreement with the union.
“Even in the face of adversity, ASUU remains resolute in its mission to ensure that no brilliant student is denied the right to education due to financial constraints,” Afolabi said.
He added that the scholarship programme is more than just financial aid—it is a means of nurturing compassion and responsibility in future leaders.
“By investing in these students today, we are planting seeds of hope and empathy, with the belief that they too will give back to society when the time comes,” he concluded.
