Trinity University, Yaba, Lagos, will graduate 323 students at its fifth convocation ceremony on Friday, with 79 of them earning First Class honours.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Clement Kolawole, disclosed this on Monday during a press conference at the university’s Celebration Arena to announce the commencement of activities for the convocation.

According to Kolawole, the 79 First Class graduates represent 24.45 per cent of the total graduating students. He also revealed that two graduands, Osemen Joy Esezobor of the Department of Computer Science and Osayuware Toluwalase Osazuwa of the Department of International Relations, achieved a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.00.

The vice-chancellor said the graduating class comprised 161 students from the Faculty of Basic Medical and Applied Sciences, 109 from the Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences, and 53 from the Faculty of Nursing Sciences.

He added that 147 students earned Second Class Upper Division honours, 48 obtained Second Class Lower Division degrees, while 10 graduated with Third Class honours.

Kolawole said the university remained committed to producing graduates equipped with relevant knowledge, practical skills and sound values to thrive in an increasingly competitive world.

He noted that several of the institution’s graduates had already made progress in scholarship, industry and professional practice, both locally and internationally.

To improve graduate employability, the vice-chancellor said the university had made skills acquisition and digital literacy programmes compulsory for all students alongside their core academic courses.

“We are already seeing results, with some of our students securing international remote jobs even before graduation through our digital literacy partnership,” he said.

Kolawole disclosed that the university had 22 fully accredited academic programmes, with four scheduled for reaccreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He said the institution had strengthened its workforce by recruiting qualified personnel, expanded its facilities to include additional classrooms, laboratories and offices, and introduced new academic programmes following successful resource verification by the NUC.

According to him, all the university’s programmes have received approval from the NUC and relevant professional bodies.

He also announced that the university’s Senate had approved a restructuring of its academic units into four faculties: Management and Social Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, Nursing Sciences, and National and Applied Sciences.

The vice-chancellor further disclosed that the institution had produced its first homegrown professor, Prof. Modupeade Adetunji, a scholar specialising in Food Microbiology and Mycotoxicology.

Activities marking the convocation week include the induction of Nursing Science graduates by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, scheduled for Tuesday, and the induction of Medical Laboratory Science graduates by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria on Wednesday.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Achievers’ University, Owo, Ondo State, Prof. Bode Ayorinde, is expected to deliver the convocation lecture on Thursday.

The main convocation ceremony, featuring the presentation of prizes and the award of degrees and diplomas, will take place on Friday, October 16.

Speaking at the press conference, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Trinity University, Samuel Olatunji, said the institution continued to review its curriculum to align with changing global demands.

Olatunji said the university was committed to building a strong academic workforce and equipping students with the knowledge and competencies required to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

He added that the institution would continue to promote integrity, hard work, diligence, faith and community service among its students.

The press conference was attended by members of the university’s governing council and management team.
