President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to a stable academic calendar, enhanced staff welfare and uninterrupted electricity supply across Nigerian universities as part of his Renewed Hope Agenda for education reform.
The President gave the assurance at the 45th convocation ceremony of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State, where he was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad.
Tinubu described education as a cornerstone of national development, stressing that institutional growth depends largely on predictability and stability in academic programmes.
“I reaffirm this administration’s commitment to keeping our educational institutions open in line with approved academic calendars and to avoiding disruptions in the nation’s education system,” the President said.
To strengthen staff welfare and productivity, Tinubu announced the introduction of a Staff Loan Scheme for academic and non-academic workers in tertiary institutions. He disclosed that ₦40 billion has been set aside for the initiative, with beneficiaries able to access loans ranging from ₦1 million to ₦10 million to ease financial pressure and improve performance.
The President also commended ABU management for reducing electricity costs through effective energy conservation, urging the university to develop a comprehensive energy policy for sustainable power management. He revealed that under the Energising Education Programme, the Federal Government, in partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency, would ensure 24-hour electricity supply to all federal tertiary institutions.
Addressing graduands, Tinubu encouraged them to embrace entrepreneurship, innovation and continuous self-development. He praised ABU’s Students Enterprise Competition organised by the International Centre of Excellence for Rural Finance and Entrepreneurship and urged students to leverage the Students’ Innovation Venture Capital Grant, which offers up to ₦50 million in non-equity seed funding for ventures with global potential.
The President also drew attention to the National Implementation Guidelines on Drug and Substance Use in Nigerian Institutions, warning that drug abuse weakens cognitive development, damages academic performance and poses risks to national security.
He further congratulated ABU for emerging overall winner at the 5th National Tertiary Admissions Performance–Merit Awards, where the university received a ₦500 million mega award from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Governing Council of ABU, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, charged the university’s Senate and management to instil values of honesty, discipline, humanity and respect in students, noting that ethical moulding is essential for producing responsible and patriotic graduates.
