The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended the industrial action embarked upon by public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State following fresh commitments by the state government to strengthen security in schools after the abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.
The union directed all public school teachers across the state to resume work on Thursday, July 2, 2026, saying the decision followed renewed engagements with the Oyo State Government and assurances on measures to improve the safety of teachers, learners and school communities.
The decision was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State Chairman of the union, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the State Secretary, Olukayode Salami.
According to the union, its National Leadership approved the suspension of the strike after reviewing the prevailing security situation and considering appeals from the Oyo State Government and other critical stakeholders.
The industrial action had been declared in protest against the kidnapping of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.
"The Nigeria Union of Teachers hereby directs all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to resume official duties on Thursday, July 2, 2026," the statement read.
Government pledges stronger school security
The union disclosed that the state government had assured it of sustained efforts to secure the release of the abducted teachers and learners while implementing broader measures to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities.
Among the commitments made by the government are intensified rescue operations, the establishment of a well-equipped Joint Security Task Force to patrol vulnerable schools and access roads, continuous engagement with affected families, psychosocial support and rehabilitation for rescued victims, as well as the payment of gratuities and other entitlements to the families of deceased teachers.
The government also pledged to reinforce the Safe School Initiative through public awareness campaigns and improved early warning systems, enhance emergency response mechanisms, dismantle criminal hideouts, upgrade school infrastructure, tackle illegal mining and open grazing in forest reserves, improve community intelligence gathering, ensure speedy prosecution of criminal suspects, enhance the welfare of security personnel and deploy technology to strengthen school security.
Union commends members, urges vigilance
The NUT commended teachers for their discipline and solidarity throughout the industrial action and acknowledged the support of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON).
The union urged teachers to remain vigilant upon resumption and promptly report suspicious activities or security threats within their schools and communities to the appropriate authorities.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, safety and dignity of teachers, pledging to sustain engagement with the government until all outstanding security concerns affecting educators and learners are fully addressed.
