Teacher Faces Three-Month Suspension Over Video Criticising Kebbi Ramadan Relief

A public school teacher in Kebbi State, Abduljalal Usman, has been suspended from duty after posting a video on social media criticising the Ramadan palliative distributed by the state government to teachers.

Usman, who works under the Kebbi State Government, had earlier shared a video on his Facebook page expressing dissatisfaction with the quantity of food items reportedly given to teachers as support during the fasting period of Ramadan.

In the video, recorded in Hausa, the teacher displayed the items he received and questioned the adequacy of the gesture. According to him, the support package consisted of just one mudu — a local measurement bowl — of rice and millet, which he described as insufficient considering the daily responsibilities of teachers.

Usman argued that teachers spend long hours educating students yet receive minimal support from authorities. In the recording, he repeatedly stated that he was not grateful for the items provided, a remark that quickly drew attention after the video began circulating widely online.

Two days after the clip went viral, Usman announced via social media that he had been suspended from his teaching duties for three months, suggesting the disciplinary action was linked to his criticism of the Ramadan palliative distribution.

According to the teacher, he received a message from the Ministry of Education as well as the Dandi Local Government Education Authority informing him of the suspension.

However, a suspension letter reportedly issued by the Office of the Education Secretary in Dandi Local Government Area stated that the disciplinary action was taken on the grounds of negligence and default in the discharge of his duties. The letter further indicated that the suspension would last three months without salary.

Following the development, Usman cautioned fellow teachers against engaging in activism without financial security, advising them to be mindful when speaking out on sensitive issues.

Meanwhile, attempts to obtain official clarification from the Kebbi State Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education were unsuccessful as of the time this report was filed.
