SUG Enforces Strict Dress Code Policy, Introduces Sanctions for Indecent Dressing at Federal Polytechnic Ede

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Federal Polytechnic Ede has announced strict enforcement measures against what it described as a growing trend of indecent dressing among students on campus.

In a statement dated February 26, 2026, and issued under the banner of the “Innovation Crew led by Comr. Shurdman,” the union leadership declared that disciplinary action would henceforth be taken against violators of the institution’s dress code.

The statement, jointly signed by SUG President Sen. Comr. Ajayi Sodiq A. (Shurdman), General Secretary Hon. Comr. Binawole Quadri Opeyemi, and Public Relations Officer Comr. Adunoye Daniel Oluwafemi (Phoenix), expressed concern over what it termed “a sudden surge in the rate of indecent dressing on campus by both male and female students.”

According to the union, maintaining modesty and decency is a fundamental expectation within an academic environment. “The Polytechnic is an academic environment, and students are expected to dress in a manner that reflects discipline, self-respect, and respect for others,” the statement read. It added that indecent dressing runs contrary to the institution’s core values of “Knowledge, Skill and Character” and “will no longer be tolerated.”

Under the new enforcement framework, first-time offenders will be assigned to clean designated areas within the campus as a corrective measure. Repeat offenders, however, risk stiffer sanctions, including suspension for one academic semester.

The SUG urged students to adhere strictly to approved dress standards and conduct themselves responsibly at all times, stressing that the directive is aimed at safeguarding the institution’s image and promoting a culture of discipline. The statement concluded with the union’s activist slogan, “Aluta Continua.”

Student reactions to the directive have been mixed.

Esther Adekunle, a National Diploma II student of Mass Communication, welcomed the move, saying standards must be upheld in a polytechnic setting. “We cannot dress anyhow and expect to be taken seriously in society. I believe the corrective measures will help,” she said.

However, Tunde Afolayan, a Higher National Diploma student in Computer Science, questioned the severity of the penalties. While supporting the principle of decency, he argued that a one-semester suspension may be excessive and called for proper orientation before strict enforcement.

Similarly, Fatima Lawal of the Accountancy Department described the directive as timely, noting that some recent outfits on campus have been distracting and inappropriate.

On the other hand, Daniel Olatunji, a Business Administration student, cautioned against selective enforcement, urging the union to ensure that the rules are clearly defined and applied fairly to all students.

As discussions continue within the campus community, the SUG leadership has reaffirmed its resolve to enforce the directive with immediate effect, underscoring its commitment to upholding discipline and preserving the values of Federal Polytechnic Ede.
