A language expert has advised English speakers to stop pronouncing the letter “p” in the word cupboard, explaining that it is a silent letter in standard pronunciation.

In a language lesson published on pronunciation rules, educationist Akeem Lasisi clarified that many speakers mistakenly articulate the word as “cup-board,” whereas the correct spoken form is “cu-board.”

According to him, the presence of the letter “p” in the spelling does not reflect its sound in speech, as it is completely silent when the word is pronounced correctly.

Lasisi broke down the confusion by comparing possible mispronunciations, noting that saying the “p” or misplacing emphasis on other consonants distorts the correct pronunciation of the word.

He explained that cupboard is not the only English word affected by silent letters, adding that similar patterns can be found in words such as receipt and raspberry, where certain letters are written but not pronounced.

The expert further highlighted that English pronunciation often differs from spelling due to historical language evolution, where words retain original written forms even after spoken usage changes over time.

He urged learners of English to pay close attention to pronunciation rules rather than relying solely on spelling, stressing that mastery of silent letters is essential for accurate and fluent speech.

The lesson is part of broader efforts to improve spoken English proficiency among learners, particularly in environments where English serves as a second language.
