Stakeholders under the *EmpowerHer Project* have urged governments at all levels to mandate the inclusion of comprehensive menstrual health education in Nigeria’s school curriculum, stressing its importance in tackling stigma and improving learning outcomes for girls.

The call was made in Port Harcourt during the launch of the book *“Periods, Pads and Proud,”* where advocates highlighted the need for early, practical education on menstrual health.

Founder of the EmpowerHer Project, Elizabeth Aderonke Odukoya, said the initiative was building a nationwide movement to ensure no girl is denied education or dignity because of her period. “Backed by 60 volunteers ranging from students to medical professionals and educators, we are working with schools and local authorities to make lasting change,” she said.

In just over a year, the project has reached more than 3,000 girls across 11 schools and communities, distributing free sanitary products and conducting interactive health sessions. Odukoya noted that the programme breaks the silence and stigma around menstruation, while engaging teachers, parents, and communities to challenge harmful myths.

The initiative received backing from the Rivers State Ministry of Education. Dr. Chinedu Nwaodu, Director of Quality Assurance, acknowledged its relevance, saying: “It’s in the curriculum, but principals must ensure teachers are truly teaching it.” He pledged the ministry’s support to strengthen implementation.

The book was reviewed by Professor Kaladada Korubo of Rivers State University, who praised it for deepening knowledge of the female reproductive system and promoting open dialogue on menstrual health.
