Nigeria has inaugurated its first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, in a move aimed at accelerating innovation, entrepreneurship and industrial development through higher education.
The project is a collaborative initiative of the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Abia State Government.
The facility was officially commissioned on Monday by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who was represented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shettima described the Innovation Pod as a strategic investment in Nigeria's future, stressing that universities must evolve beyond their traditional roles of teaching and research to become centres for innovation, enterprise development, technology transfer and industrial competitiveness.
According to him, the establishment of the Manu-Tech UniPod reflects the Federal Government's commitment to repositioning higher education as a catalyst for research commercialisation, entrepreneurship, job creation and economic transformation.
"This initiative represents far more than the commissioning of another university facility. It is the unveiling of a broader national vision that positions our universities as drivers of industrial transformation, innovation, enterprise creation and sustainable economic development," he said.
The Vice President reaffirmed the Federal Government's resolve to build an education system capable of developing talent, promoting innovation and supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's ambition of transforming Nigeria into a one-trillion-dollar economy by 2030.
In his keynote address titled "Science Meets Enterprise," Governor Alex Otti of Abia State said the decision to establish the country's first Manu-Tech UniPod in Abia reflected the confidence of the Federal Government and the UNDP in the state's growing reputation as a centre for innovation and industrial development.
He noted that the partnership was already yielding tangible results and expressed appreciation to the project partners for selecting Abia as the host state.
United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa, described the Innovation Pod as more than a physical structure, saying it represents a commitment to unlocking the creativity and innovative potential of Africa's young people.
According to her, the facility will serve as a multidisciplinary innovation hub where engineering, business, technology and social enterprise converge to create practical solutions to development challenges.
"What this Innovation Pod represents is more than a physical space. It is a commitment to unlock the creative and innovative potential of Africa's youth. Here, engineering meets art, business meets social enterprise, and innovation thrives through collaboration and diversity of thought," she said.
Also speaking, the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, described the inauguration as part of a broader innovation agenda unfolding across the country.
She said the initiative was a direct response to Governor Otti's vision of positioning Abia as Nigeria's leading hub for innovation-driven industrial transformation.
Attafuah commended TETFund, under the leadership of Executive Secretary Arc. Sonny Echono, for supporting strategic infrastructure development in Nigerian universities.
She further disclosed that the UNDP is mobilising one billion dollars to establish Africa's largest innovation ecosystem, with plans to support 10,000 startups, scale 1,000 high-growth ventures, improve the livelihoods of more than 100 million people and generate an estimated 10 billion dollars in economic value across the continent over the next decade.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof. Ursala Akanwa, described the commissioning as a landmark achievement in the institution's history.
She said the Innovation Pod aligns with the university's mandate of advancing science, technology and innovation to promote agricultural development, manufacturing, entrepreneurship and sustainable economic growth.
