The Kwara State Government has prohibited all graduation, valedictory, and end-of-academic-session ceremonies in both public and private schools across the state, citing rising security concerns.
The directive was contained in a memo dated June 15, 2026, and signed by Mrs. B. Osanupin on behalf of the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe.
According to the circular, all school proprietors, principals, headteachers, and administrators are to immediately cancel any planned end-of-session celebrations for the 2026 academic year.
The memo, addressed to the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board in Ilorin, stated that the decision was taken in response to prevailing security challenges in the country and the need to maintain order, safety, and discipline within schools.
It further emphasized that no public or private school in the state is permitted to organise graduation parties, valedictory services, or similar ceremonies under any guise.
“Please note that any school found to be in violation of this directive shall be liable to appropriate sanctions in accordance with existing regulations,” the memo warned.
It added: “By this notice, all concerned are advised to be guided accordingly.”
The state government maintained that strict enforcement measures will be applied to ensure full compliance across all education levels.
