Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the vision behind Westerfield College’s operations in the United Kingdom aligns strongly with Lagos State’s youth empowerment agenda, particularly in the areas of quality education and global exposure.
Sanwo-Olu made the remark when the Chief Executive Officer of Westerfield College, Mr. Michael Dosunmu, led a delegation of the institution on a courtesy visit to him in Lagos, as part of activities marking the school’s first anniversary as a wholly owned Nigerian institution operating successfully in the UK. The college is also participating in the International Education Fair (IEF) and hosting the School Leaders and Teachers Conference (SLTC) 2026.
The governor noted that initiatives such as Westerfield College’s offshore presence support Lagos State’s vision of empowering young people through globally competitive education, adding that such platforms position Lagos as a hub of innovation and academic excellence.
He commended the institution for creating opportunities that enable Nigerian youths to compete favourably on the global stage.
Westerfield College, a leading Sixth Form institution with campuses in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, became the first wholly owned African school to establish operations in the UK in 2025. The milestone was earlier celebrated at its official launch held at the British High Commissioner’s residence, where Sanwo-Olu praised Dosunmu, a Lagos indigene, for the achievement.
The visit formed part of Westerfield College’s engagement with key education stakeholders as it continues to expand pathways for Nigerian students seeking internationally competitive education. During the meeting, the college reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening educational linkages between Nigeria and the UK and supporting the aspirations of young Nigerians through quality international programmes.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted the academic prowess of Nigerian youths, noting that their growing success globally reflects the country’s strong human capital base.
He said the establishment of Westerfield College in the UK opens new opportunities for projecting Nigeria and Lagos positively on the global education map.
As part of its current engagements, Westerfield College is hosting the School Leaders and Teachers Conference (SLTC) 2026 and participating in the International Education Fair, a platform designed to give students, parents and schools direct access to guidance on international education opportunities. A major highlight is the Westerfield College UK Summer Camp Programme.
The 2026 summer camp will run in three cohorts — July 20 to August 1, August 3 to 15, and August 17 to 29 — at the college’s Worcester campus in the United Kingdom. The programme combines academic tracks such as STEM, pre-medicine, business and law, computing and coding, as well as arts and humanities.
Participants will also benefit from sports including football, basketball, tennis and athletics, immersive English learning, educational tours, leadership development and networking opportunities aimed at personal growth and global exposure.
Speaking during the visit, Dosunmu said Westerfield College is driven by a vision of education as a tool for global mobility and personal transformation. He explained that the UK Summer Camp Programme is designed to help Nigerian students build confidence, global awareness and leadership capacity, while offering families practical insight into the British education system.
The delegation described Westerfield College UK as a major milestone, being the first African-owned and Africa-based school to establish a campus in the United Kingdom. They said the UK campus blends British academic standards with Westerfield’s personalised, student-centred approach, offering Cambridge A Levels, University Foundation Programmes, pre-medicine courses and enrichment pathways that support strong university progression.
According to them, the courtesy visit reflects Westerfield College’s broader mission to collaborate with government and education leaders to advance access to high-quality, future-focused education for Nigerian students, positioning the institution as a bridge between local excellence and global opportunity.
