Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Estar to accelerate the integration of technology-driven education across public primary and secondary schools in Lagos State.
The governor disclosed the development via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, describing the partnership as a strategic move to modernise the state’s public education system through the deployment of digital learning platforms and supporting infrastructure.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the initiative will grant students access to curriculum-aligned digital tools aimed at strengthening critical thinking, communication, leadership, and decision-making skills, while also exposing them to emerging fields such as artificial intelligence.
He added that the programme is expected to enhance reading proficiency, comprehension, classroom engagement, and student confidence, ultimately improving overall learning outcomes across the state’s public schools.
As part of the agreement, the Lagos State Government will also prioritise teacher capacity development, equipping educators with the necessary training to effectively utilise the new digital tools and deliver more interactive, impactful lessons.
However, the announcement has sparked mixed reactions among stakeholders. While many welcomed the initiative as a progressive step toward modernising education, others expressed concerns over its implementation.
Critics pointed to previous initiatives that failed to achieve lasting impact, citing persistent challenges such as inconsistent electricity supply, limited access to digital devices, teacher retention issues, and long-term funding sustainability.
Some commentators also questioned the decision to partner with a foreign organisation, urging the government to explore collaborations with local edtech firms. Others emphasised the need for inclusivity, calling for deliberate measures to ensure that students with disabilities are not excluded from the programme.
As of the time of reporting, the Lagos State Government has yet to release detailed information regarding the implementation framework and rollout timeline for the initiative.
