Public schools in Rivers State are recording remarkable improvements and producing young innovators, thanks to the annual science quiz competition sponsored by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited, the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) has said.
The competition, aimed at fostering scientific literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, has become a transformative platform for secondary school students—particularly those from public institutions—to demonstrate creativity and intellectual depth.
Chairman of STAN, Dr. Peter Nwagor, commended NLNG for its continued investment in science education, noting that the contest has reignited academic enthusiasm among public school students who are now more eager to learn, innovate, and compete.
Speaking during a reception organised by NLNG in Port Harcourt for Rivers State’s winning schools—Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School (winner of the Science Project category) and Community Secondary School, Igbo Etche (winner of the National Science Quiz)—Nwagor said the initiative is gradually reviving public schools and reshaping attitudes toward academic excellence.
“What NLNG is doing has given public schools a platform to shine and inspired students to work harder. Many are already preparing for next year’s competition,” he said, adding that the effort is yielding visible progress in science education across the state.
He also praised NLNG for donating laboratory facilities to schools in Igbo Etche, describing the gesture as “a strong push for sustainable science learning.”
NLNG’s External Relations and Sustainable Development Officer, Mrs. Sophia Horsefall, said the company was proud to celebrate the students’ achievements, noting that their success reflects the firm’s broader commitment to nurturing future leaders in science and technology.
“We are deeply invested in supporting education. These students have shown excellence and dedication, and we want them to continue striving for greater success,” Horsefall stated.
Similarly, the Director of Science and Technology Education at the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Dr. Inisefiekabo Job, lauded NLNG for its consistent support and impact, urging the students to remain focused and make the most of the opportunities presented to them.
The winning schools expressed gratitude to NLNG and STAN for their encouragement and pledged to sustain their commitment to academic and scientific excellence.
