Super Falcons forward Rinsola Babajide has revealed that her goal celebration during Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Tunisia in their opening Group B match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) was a tribute to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool star who tragically died in a car crash last Thursday.

Speaking to Channels Television after the match in Casablanca, Morocco, Babajide said the gesture was inspired by Jota’s signature celebration.

“It was just like a tribute for Diogo Jota, the one that died, and for his brother,” Babajide explained. “It was a signature celebration of his, and I just wanted to contribute and do something for him. He was one of my favourite players at Liverpool when I was there as well.”

Babajide’s goal helped seal a dominant performance for the Nigerian side as they kicked off their WAFCON campaign in style. The Super Falcons are scheduled to face Botswana in their next group game on July 10.
