The Niger State Police Command has detained a nursing student, identified as Stella Joseph, in connection with the sudden death of a lecturer from the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Otori Abdulfatai Aiyede, in Minna, Niger State.
The incident occurred on January 27, 2026, when the deceased reportedly travelled from Bida to visit Joseph at her residence along Niteco Road, Tunga area of Minna.
According to preliminary reports, Aiyede was served a meal of spaghetti and egg shortly after arriving at the house. Moments after eating, he allegedly began to convulse, collapsed and was rushed to the General Hospital, Minna, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the command received a distress report that the lecturer became ill after being served food during the visit.
“The deceased came from Bida to Minna to see Stella Joseph. She served him food, after which he convulsed and later died at the hospital,” Abiodun stated.
The police clarified earlier claims suggesting that Aiyede was a lecturer at Newgate University, Minna, noting that the institution has denied any affiliation with him. Reliable sources confirmed that the deceased was a lecturer with the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State.
Investigators have since taken Joseph into custody as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined, and the police are expected to conduct an autopsy to ascertain whether poisoning or any other medical factors were involved.
The development has unsettled the academic community in Niger State, with calls for a thorough and transparent investigation. While the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, is yet to issue an official statement, the institution is expected to cooperate fully with security agencies as inquiries continue.
Police authorities said further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
