Remi Tinubu Fulfils Pledge to OAU, Donates 21 Shuttle Buses to Alma Mater

First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has fulfilled the first phase of her transportation support pledge to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, with the delivery of 21 brand-new shuttle buses to the institution.

The university, in an official statement, confirmed the arrival of the vehicles, noting that the donation represents the first batch of a total of 50 buses earlier promised by Mrs. Tinubu.

According to the statement, the buses were handed over exactly one year after she made the commitment during a grand commemorative event, marking a major step toward modernising OAU’s internal transportation network.

The gesture, the university said, stemmed from the First Lady’s concern over the reliance on commercial motorcycles as the primary means of movement within the campus — a situation she described as “unbefitting of a 21st-century world-class African university.”

Mrs. Tinubu had first made the pledge in October 2024 during the 50th birthday celebration of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, where she expressed her desire to enhance students’ safety and comfort.

“The arrival of the initial tranche of white-coloured buses on October 10 transformed the pledge into reality, drawing throngs of excited onlookers as the vehicles gleamed under the Ife sun,” the statement read.

The university described the development as a milestone in improving mobility, safety, and the overall learning environment for students and staff.
