The Redeemer’s University has recorded a major academic milestone as one of its faculty members, Dr. Timilehin Gideon Shaba, emerged winner of the 2025 PhD Thesis Prize of the Nigerian Society of Physical Sciences (NSPS) in the Mathematics and Statistics category and was subsequently named the overall Best PhD Thesis awardee across all disciplines.

The prestigious recognition positions Dr. Shaba among Nigeria’s leading young researchers in the physical sciences and marks a significant achievement for the university’s research community.

The award was publicly announced on January 11, 2026, attracting commendations from academics and professional bodies nationwide. The formal presentation took place on February 10, 2026, during the 2026 NSPS Conference hosted at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State. The annual conference drew scientists, scholars and postgraduate researchers from across the country, underscoring the national competitiveness of the honour.

University authorities described Dr. Shaba’s doctoral research as rigorous, innovative and impactful, noting that the NSPS PhD Thesis Prize is highly selective and reserved for dissertations demonstrating exceptional scholarly depth and relevance. Securing both the sectional award in Mathematics and Statistics and the overall Best PhD Thesis Prize highlights the national significance of his research contribution across multiple scientific disciplines.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shadrach Olufemi Akindele, expressed pride in the accomplishment, stating that the award reflects the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and a thriving research culture.

According to him, the recognition not only celebrates Dr. Shaba’s dedication and intellectual discipline but also reinforces the university’s growing reputation as a centre for quality research and postgraduate training in Nigeria.

As part of the prize package, Dr. Shaba received a ₦550,000 cash award, an official certificate and a commemorative plaque. He was also conferred Life Membership of the Nigerian Society of Physical Sciences, along with a full Article Processing Charge waiver for one publication annually in any NSPS journal for the next three years. The award further includes conference sponsorship beginning in 2027, strengthening his engagement within the national scientific community.

Academic observers note that recognitions of this scale contribute significantly to strengthening Nigeria’s research ecosystem, particularly in mathematics and statistics, where advanced analytical capacity is critical to national development.

For Redeemer’s University, the achievement serves as both institutional validation and inspiration for emerging scholars, reaffirming the potential of Nigerian universities to compete at the highest levels of academic distinction when research is effectively supported and nurtured.
