The award recognizes the scholar’s pivotal work in proving that glass bead production, once widely believed to have been imported into Africa, is in fact an indigenous innovation with deep historical roots on the continent.

The scholar’s meticulous study, which combined archaeological evidence, chemical analysis, and oral traditions, revealed that ancient African societies were independently producing glass beads centuries before significant European contact.
