The Professor Sola Akinrinade Library at Osun State University has firmly established itself as the intellectual heart of the university, combining modern academic resources with a rich historical legacy. Officially named in 2025 after the university’s pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sola Akinrinade, the library embodies both the vision and academic excellence that have defined UNIOSUN since its inception.

Honouring a Visionary Leader

Professor Akinrinade, an erudite historian and visionary administrator, conceptualised UNIOSUN as a multi-campus institution, a bold and unconventional idea at its inception. Today, the university thrives across six campuses, a testament to his foresight. The library’s christening in 2025 coincided with the launch of the inaugural Professor Sola Akinrinade Library Lecture, cementing its role as an academic and symbolic landmark.

A First-Class graduate in History from the then University of Ife, Professor Akinrinade earned a Master’s degree before completing his doctorate at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His academic career began in 1982 as a Graduate Assistant, spanning more than four decades, including 26 years as a Professor.

Central Hub of UNIOSUN Library Services

Situated on the Osogbo main campus, the library coordinates resources across UNIOSUN’s multi-campus system, supporting undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes across all faculties. During a recent visit by The Nigeria Education News, students were observed actively using both reading halls and digital access points, reflecting a blend of traditional and modern learning.

User-Friendly Digital Access

The library offers an open-access catalogue that allows users to search for books, journals, and other materials without logging in. Advanced search options and filters make research efficient, particularly during peak academic periods.

Registered users can also manage accounts online, reserving books, renewing loans, and suggesting acquisitions. Library officials noted that this feature has streamlined operations and reduced queues.

Supporting Digital and Hybrid Learning

In line with global best practices, the library provides electronic databases, e-books, and e-journals, enabling remote research across UNIOSUN’s campuses. Students described the digital resources as “helpful, especially during project writing and final-year research.”

Professional Guidance and Support

Structured support is available through Reference and Reader Services Librarians, reachable at 08055064683, who assist with research, borrowing, and technical guidance. The staff’s mission goes beyond storing knowledge—they aim to guide students in effectively navigating academic resources.

Naming the library after Professor Akinrinade while he is still alive is a rare institutional recognition, reflecting deep respect for his stewardship. His legacy—encompassing the multi-campus vision, rigorous academic standards, and research-focused growth—remains embedded in UNIOSUN’s identity.
