ABUJA, 14 July 2025 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, a national public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The proclamation, conveyed by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo, follows approval from President Tinubu and underscores Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.

In a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Interior, the government explained that the one‑day holiday will give Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on Buhari’s dedication to national unity, integrity, and progress.

Under the decree:

  • Holiday Date: Tuesday, 15 July 2025

  • Mourning Protocol: National flags to be flown at half‑mast from Sunday, 13 July through Saturday, 19 July

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the statement read. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

Minister Tunji‑Ojo urged citizens to observe the holiday by fostering peace, patriotism, and national cohesion—principles championed by Buhari during his tenure. The Federal Government also extended its deepest condolences to the family of the late president, the people of Katsina State, and the entire Nigerian populace.
