Peter Obi Faults UTME Registration Chaos in Anambra, Calls for Immediate Action

Peter Obi, former presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, has raised serious concerns over the ongoing turmoil surrounding the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration process, particularly at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Amawbia office in Anambra State.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, Obi described what he witnessed during a recent visit to the Amawbia registration centre as a “repeat” of the difficulties students faced during last year’s exercise. Large crowds, confusion, and long queues, he said, persisted despite earlier expectations that corrective steps would have been taken by examination authorities.

Obi acknowledged that JAMB may have legitimate reasons for proscribing several Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres over alleged infractions. However, he urged the board to adopt a more balanced and compassionate approach to avoid having candidates bear the brunt of administrative decisions. Among his recommendations was allowing centres under investigation to operate under strict supervision and temporarily reactivating previously approved centres to ease pressure on existing facilities.

With the UTME registration deadline looming on February 26, the former governor warned that many students — including those who travel long distances and sleep in Awka to secure registration slots — risk missing the examination not due to lack of preparation, but because of systemic bottlenecks. “If nothing urgent is done, some will miss the examination — not for lack of preparation, but because the system failed them,” he stated.

Obi stressed that students should not suffer for systemic shortcomings and called on relevant authorities to intervene swiftly to ensure no candidate’s academic future is compromised by administrative lapses.
