Concerned parents of Nigerian students studying abroad on government scholarships on Monday barricaded the main entrance of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, demanding immediate payment of long-overdue stipends owed to their children.
The visibly aggrieved parents said the students—currently enrolled in various institutions under Bilateral Education Agreements (BEA) and other federal scholarship schemes—have been left stranded in foreign countries as the government has allegedly failed to pay their allowances for 16 months, in addition to an outstanding eight-month shortfall.
Clutching placards and chanting solidarity songs, the protesters said many of the affected students are facing severe hardship, ranging from unpaid rent and lack of feeding allowances to the inability to purchase academic materials.
They called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene to prevent further psychological and academic damage to the scholars, noting that the prolonged delay has tarnished Nigeria’s international reputation and placed the students at risk of expulsion from their host institutions.
More details are expected as government officials engage with the protesters.
