The Oyo State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has strongly condemned the abduction of pupils, students, and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing the incident as a brutal assault on education, humanity, and peaceful coexistence.
In a statement jointly signed by the chapter’s President, Okechukwu Nwabunike, and Executive Secretary, Promise Aja, the socio-cultural group expressed deep sympathy with the affected families, school communities, and residents of Oyo State, particularly those in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities.
The organisation described the attack as a “barbaric act against innocent children and educators,” noting that it remained deeply disturbed by the development while standing in full solidarity with victims and their families.
Ohanaeze also condemned the killing of a mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, whose death was confirmed by Governor Seyi Makinde following the circulation of a video linked to the incident online. The group said the killing underscores the growing brutality of criminal elements and poses a serious threat to education, peace, and social stability.
It further extended condolences to the family of the slain teacher as well as to the families of security personnel, including soldiers, members of the Amotekun Corps, and local vigilantes reportedly killed during rescue operations.
Reaffirming its position on security, the organisation expressed support for the Makinde-led administration, commending ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and maintain order across the state.
Ohanaeze urged the adoption of stronger community-based security systems, especially around schools, and called for improved intelligence-sharing mechanisms to prevent future attacks. It also appealed to residents to support security agencies with credible information that could aid rescue operations.
The group warned against the circulation of sensitive or unverified information on social media, stressing that such actions could hinder ongoing rescue efforts. It emphasized that vigilance and responsible information sharing remain critical to addressing insecurity.
Ohanaeze further called on the Nigeria Police, military, and other security agencies to intensify efforts toward the safe rescue of the abducted victims and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice without delay.
It concluded that insecurity in the country can only be effectively tackled through unity, collaboration, and collective responsibility, while expressing hope for the safe return of all abducted persons.
