The attack occurred when heavily armed gunmen, reportedly riding motorcycles, invaded Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, abducting teachers and pupils.

Community sources disclosed that about 46 persons, including seven teachers and 39 pupils and students, were taken away during the coordinated assault.

Among the abducted teachers are the principal of Community High School, Mrs Alamu Folawe; vice principal, Mr Ojo Jonathan; Mr Olatunde Zacchaeus; Mr John Olaleye; Mr Michael Oyedokun; Mrs Oladeji; and Mary Akanbi of Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.

Residents also alleged that the attackers stole four motorcycles during the operation.

The situation worsened after reports emerged that one of the abducted teachers was killed while in captivity, heightening fears among families of the remaining victims and residents of the community.

A distress video earlier circulated online showing Mrs Alamu appealing to the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, and well-meaning Nigerians to assist in securing the victims’ release peacefully.

The Oyo State Police Command had earlier confirmed the abduction, stating that tactical teams and intelligence operatives were deployed to rescue the victims and track down the perpetrators.

Reacting to the incident, Governor Seyi Makinde announced a sustained security offensive aimed at rescuing the victims and dismantling criminal networks operating within the state.

Speaking after a high-level security meeting at his residence in Ibadan, the governor assured residents that security agencies were working tirelessly to secure the safe return of those abducted.

“We have just concluded a review of the security situation following the abduction of teachers and schoolchildren. The government is working round the clock to address the situation decisively,” Makinde said.

The governor confirmed that some security personnel sustained injuries during rescue operations, while one operative of the Amotekun Corps remains in critical condition.

“One Amotekun operative is currently in critical condition, while soldiers, hunters and other operatives sustained injuries during the operation. Government will take full responsibility for their treatment,” he stated.

Makinde also confirmed the death of one of the abducted teachers, identified as a Mathematics teacher.

“Unfortunately, we received information indicating that one of the teachers was killed by the attackers. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families,” he added.

The governor said the state government had expanded its response beyond military operations by engaging traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to support rescue efforts.

He further disclosed that a joint security task force involving the police, military, Amotekun operatives, hunters, and local vigilantes had been mobilised for ongoing search-and-rescue operations.

Makinde warned that increasing military pressure on criminal groups in northern Nigeria was forcing bandits and terrorists to migrate towards southern states, stressing the need for stronger regional collaboration to tackle emerging security threats.

He also pledged regular public briefings as efforts continue to rescue the abducted victims and restore normalcy in the affected communities.
