The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Osun State University (UniOsun) branch, has confirmed its full participation in the two-week nationwide warning strike declared by the union’s national leadership.
Chairman of the UniOsun ASUU branch, Dr. Weinde Olaosebikan, disclosed this on Monday in Osogbo, stating that the decision aligns with the directive from the union’s National Executive Council (NEC).
“The strike is a directive to all branches of ASUU nationwide; therefore, all branches must join and comply maximally,” Olaosebikan said. “UniOsun ASUU will join the strike. There is no division among our members. We will issue our official directive before noon. The strike commences at 12 midnight today.”
He added that all academic activities across the university would be suspended for the duration of the two-week warning strike in compliance with the national directive.
The national president of ASUU, Dr. Chris Piwuna, had on Sunday announced the industrial action during a press briefing at the University of Abuja, following the expiration of the ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to address the union’s longstanding demands.
According to Piwuna, the strike became necessary after the government failed to implement agreements relating to lecturers’ earned academic allowances, withheld salaries, and other welfare-related issues.
The two-week warning strike marks another chapter in the ongoing standoff between ASUU and the Federal Government over the conditions of service in Nigeria’s public universities.
