A federal lawmaker from Osun State, Representative Bamidele Salam, has announced plans to sponsor 700 prospective candidates for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) across his constituency.
Salam, who represents Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo Federal Constituency, disclosed the initiative in a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Education and Civil Society Matters, Umar Salman.
According to the statement, the programme forms part of the lawmaker’s sustained commitment to expanding access to education and easing the financial pressure on parents and guardians amid prevailing economic challenges.
“This intervention is crucial, especially in the face of the current economic realities confronting many families,” the statement said.
It explained that beneficiaries would be drawn from the four local government areas in the constituency through a transparent and inclusive selection process designed to ensure fairness and equity while supporting deserving students.
Interested candidates are required to apply online via: https://forms.gle/z82avnxPqDRpawPZ9. The application portal will close on Friday, February 13, 2026, and applicants have been advised to complete their submissions promptly.
Only shortlisted candidates who meet the selection criteria will be contacted via text message (SMS) by the Education Committee with further guidelines. The lawmaker’s office assured applicants that the entire process would be merit-driven and transparent.
Commending the initiative, a lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Dr. Ogunrotimi, described the move as timely and impactful.
“This is a commendable effort by Rep. Salam, and it will go a long way in supporting students within his constituency,” he said.
Similarly, a lecturer at Adeleke University, Ede, Dr. Tosin Joshua, praised the lawmaker and urged other public office holders to emulate the gesture.
“Education is central to national development, and initiatives like this encourage access and academic excellence among young people,” he noted.
With the deadline approaching, eligible candidates across Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo are encouraged to apply early to take advantage of the opportunity.
