Osun Governor Adeleke Appears on PDP Primary Ballot Despite Resignation Amid Party Crisis

OSOGBO — Despite officially resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name appeared on the ballot for the party’s governorship primary as 957 delegates b..

The Secretary of the Primary Committee, Sunday Solarin, announced the start of voting shortly after delegate accreditation concluded around 11:35 a.m. Solarin noted that the two aspirants in contention were Adeleke and Adebayo Adedamola, adding that Adeleke had formally resigned from the party.

He warned delegates that votes cast for Adeleke would “eventually amount to waste,” urging them to follow instructions during the exercise, which was ongoing at the time of filing this report.

Observers from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a PDP national committee led by Humphrey Abba were present at the venue, alongside a heavy security deployment from the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Delegates were screened at the entrance and exit before the exercise commenced.

The conduct of the primary was overshadowed by uncertainty arising from internal party disputes. Theophilus Shan, a factional National Organising Secretary of the PDP, instructed that the primary proceed as scheduled. However, Umar Bature, National Organising Secretary of another faction, contended that the exercise had been postponed.

Governor Adeleke had tendered his resignation from the PDP in a letter dated December 4, 2025, addressed to Sagba Abogunde, PDP Ward 2 Chairman in Ede North Local Government. A copy of the letter obtained by PUNCH Online read, in part:

"Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect. I thank the PDP for the opportunities given to me for my elections as Senator representing Osun West and as Governor of Osun State under the PDP."

The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the resignation.

While Osun PDP leadership indicated that Adeleke may no longer seek the party’s nomination for the 2026 governorship election, the party noted that his decision could change if the internal crisis is resolved, recognised by INEC, and concluded within the Commission’s timeline for the Osun poll.

Addressing journalists on Monday, Osun PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi said the crisis had made it impossible to conduct the governorship primary as originally scheduled for December 2. According to INEC’s timetable for the August 8, 2026 governorship election, parties fielding candidates have until December 15 to submit the names of their flagbearers.
