OOU SUG Approves ₦50 Increase in Campus Transport Fare Amid Rising Fuel Costs

The Olabisi Onabanjo University Students’ Union Government has approved a ₦50 increase in campus transportation fares across all routes at Olabisi Onabanjo University, with the adjustment taking effect from March 24, 2026.

Union leaders said the decision followed extensive consultations with campus transport operators who had raised concerns about the impact of rising fuel prices on their operations.

In a statement made available to reporters, representatives of the Students’ Union explained that drivers initially proposed a ₦200 fare increment, but the union intervened to negotiate a lower adjustment in order to reduce the financial burden on students.

“We stepped in to ensure that the increase remained minimal while still acknowledging the economic realities facing transport operators,” an SUG executive stated.

Reactions among students have been mixed. Some acknowledged the economic pressures affecting drivers, while others expressed concerns about the cumulative effect of the increment on daily commuting costs.

A 300-level Mass Communication student noted that although the increase appears small, it could become significant when multiplied by several trips taken each day. Another student, however, commended the union for reducing the proposed increase from ₦200, describing the outcome as a “reasonable compromise.”

Campus transport operators have also defended the adjustment, citing the volatility of fuel prices and operational costs. One driver, who requested anonymity, said the increment was necessary to sustain services.

“Fuel prices have been changing frequently. Without this adjustment, many of us would struggle to keep operating,” he said, adding that the agreement with the Students’ Union reflects a balance between student welfare and the realities of transportation costs.

To prevent exploitation, the SUG assured students that it will closely monitor compliance with the approved fare structure. The union emphasized that no driver is permitted to charge above the new rate, warning that sanctions will be imposed on anyone found violating the directive.

Students were also advised to carry exact change when boarding campus vehicles in order to reduce disputes and delays during transactions, particularly during peak hours.

Importantly, the union clarified that the fare adjustment is temporary and will be reviewed once fuel prices stabilize. While the assurance has provided some relief to students, some remain cautious.

“We just hope it truly goes back to normal and doesn’t become permanent like many other ‘temporary’ increases,” a final-year student remarked.

Observers say the development reflects the broader economic pressures affecting institutions and daily life across Nigeria, where fluctuations in fuel prices continue to influence the cost of transportation and services.
