Workers in tertiary institutions owned by the Ondo State Government have suspended their one-month industrial action following an intervention by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The workers began the strike on September 2, 2026, over the non-implementation of agreed Federal Government-union wage structures, unpaid allowances and other unresolved welfare concerns.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Chairman and Secretary of the Joint Action Committee of the Ondo State-owned tertiary institutions, Tayo Ogungbeni and Kunle Akinwonmi, announced that the strike had been suspended with effect from Tuesday, September 29.
The unions said the decision followed a financial intervention by the state government aimed at resolving the issues that triggered the industrial action.
“Following the financial intervention of our amiable Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in the crisis that led to our indefinite strike on September 2, 2026, we wish to inform the general public that the indefinite strike is hereby suspended with effect from Tuesday, September 29, 2026,” the statement said.
The unions commended Aiyedatiwa, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Union Matters, Bola Taiwo, for their roles in resolving the dispute.
They also acknowledged the contributions of members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the general public towards ending the impasse, which they said had negatively affected the state's education sector.
The affected workers are members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union and National Association of Academic Technologists.
They work across Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; and the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.
While suspending the strike, the Joint Action Committee appealed to the managements of the affected institutions to urgently address the non-financial aspects of the Federal Government-unions agreement.
The unions warned that failure to resolve the outstanding issues could create grounds for another industrial action.
“In view of the above development, our members in all the affected universities are hereby directed to resume duties on Tuesday, September 29, 2026,” the statement added.
